Borehole Pumps

How to choose a Borehole Pump?

Borehole pumps are a class of submersible pumps used to lift water from great bore depths. There are a number of factors that goes into consideration while sizing a borehole pump. Sizing depends on the borehole yield in cubic per hour, and the total pumping head in meters. The design features of the pump and accessories will highly depend on the water quality. For example if the water is highly saline, a pump with stainless steel casing and impellers is the most ideal. For saline water, it is also advisable to use upvc drop pipes.

Steadypoint Engineering is a premier distributor and repairer of premium submersible pumps including Grundfos, Lowara and Pedrollo. Our range of high quality pumps have been engineered to meet the needs, challenges and requirements of virtually every industry.

It is first necessary to calculate the appropriate pump head.  Borehole pump head is calculated as a sum of bore depth and elevation (height difference from the top of the bore to the highest point of discharge) and distance of pipeline from the pump to the furthest point. However, distance of pipeline must be divided by ten.

Other parameters to pay attention to when choosing a borehole pump correctly are;

  • pump diameter- must be smaller that the borehole diameter.
  • Power supply
  • maximum allowed sand content in the water

Typical Borehole Equipment

First is the purchase of a complete pump set (a coupled wet-end and the submersible motor). Second is the purchase of separate products (accessories), which in combination also ensures its function. These accessories include column pipes, borehole cover head, submersible cable and the switching unit. Submersible borehole pumps must also be equipped with a water level monitoring system to protect the pump from dry running. Although borehole pumps have an integrated check valve, it is also necessary to install a check valve on the borehole head so that the water above the pump does not damage it with its pressure (water hammer).

Can Borehole Pumps be Used in a Well?

Yes. Borehole pumps can be placed vertically or horizontally. However, your pump must be equipped with a cooling jacket. It is a special device in a shape of a tube which function is to cover your pump. It is practically an imitation of a borehole. Borehole pump requires water to swirl around it for proper cooling. If a submersible pump is placed in standing water, it may overheat and cause irreversible damage.
